With all the talk about AI, there’s also a lot of fear. Some photographers are convinced that AI is coming to take their jobs, that it will replace the need for professional photographers entirely. But I don’t see it that way. Just like the invention of the smartphone didn’t eliminate the need for professional photographers, AI is not going to replace us. Instead, it’s going to change the way we work and give smart photographers a serious advantage over the competition.
AI Is Not Here to Replace You—It’s Here to Help You
There’s this fear that ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok might take over our work, but let’s get real – remember when phones with cameras came out? Photography didn’t die; it evolved. AI isn’t about replacing us; it’s about enhancing what we do. Photography is not just about pushing a button and it’s done….. good photography is much more than that. A great photo requires skill, creativity, and an understanding of how to use light, angles, and composition to tell a story. It also requires problem-solving, because no two shoots are ever the same. Whether it’s adjusting to bad weather, fixing unexpected color casts, or dealing with a poorly staged home, photographers bring an expertise to the table that AI simply can’t replicate.
AI can assist with certain tasks, but it cannot replace the human eye for detail or the intuition that a photographer develops over years of experience. A well-trained AI can generate marketing copy, suggest edits, or help process large batches of images, but it still relies on human guidance. It’s not going to show up at a property, find the best angles, or know how to make a home feel warm and inviting. AI is a tool, not a substitute for the experience and artistry of a professional photographer.

AI is just not as smart as a real person. Yet. For a long time, if you asked any AI how many “r’s” in “strawberry” it would respond “3”. And AI can’t seem to do hands well. Take a look at the master image for this port- yes, it is AI-generated. It took 1 minute to get the suggestion, and another image for DALLE to generate it. But it’s not quite ready for prime time, is it? Do you see the problem? HINT: AI does not do hands well.
Embrace AI, Don’t Fear It
Rather than fearing AI, photographers should learn how to use it effectively. AI is best used as a time-saving tool that takes care of repetitive tasks, allowing you to focus on what really matters—shooting, improving your craft, and growing your business.
One of the most useful applications of AI is in social media and content creation. Many photographers struggle with consistency in their marketing, simply because they don’t have the time or the desire to create content. AI can generate blog posts, captions, and even engagement strategies in a fraction of the time it would take to do it manually. Instead of spending hours planning social media posts, you can have an AI-driven content calendar ready to go in an afternoon.
